How To Insert Video Into Powerpoint

Powerpoint is a great tool for creating presentations. By adding video to your slides, you can spice up your presentations and really catch the attention of the audience. You could add one of these moving backgrounds, for instance.

Adding a video can seem like a challenge, but it actually isn’t that hard. Here is how to insert video into powerpoint.

1. First, go to the slide that you want your video to appear on.

2. In your menu, go to ‘Insert’ then hover your cursor over ‘Movie’ and select ‘Movie from File’

3. Now select your video and click ‘insert’. Your video is now inserted into the slide.

4. Now you can scale your video to the preferred size. You do this just like you would scale any other item, by dragging the corners. If you want your video to be the background of the slide, make it as big as the frame.

5. To format the movie, right-click on the video and select ‘Format Movie…’ You now get a window with detailed format settings. These settings are exactly the same as the format settings of a still image. You could add a stroke to the edges of the video, add shadows, reflections, etc. Click ‘ok’ to exit this window.

6. To control how the video behaves in the presentation, double-click the video. You’ll see that the toolbar in the top of your screen jumps to ‘Format movie’.

7. Under ‘Start:’ you can choose if the movie starts to play automatically when you reach this slide, or if the movie should first be clicked on, before it starts to play.

8. Click on ‘playback options’ to choose how your video plays back. You can choose to:

  • play it full screen
  • hide it while it’s not playing
  • loop it until it’s stopped (recommended if used as a moving background)
  • rewind it after it stops playing

9. You can also choose the poster frame for your video, which is the image your video will display when it’s not playing. To choose a frame from your video, let it play untill that frame, then pause it and click ‘Current Frame’ in the options. You can also select a custom picture from another file by choosing ‘Picture from file’

That’s how you insert video into powerpoint, format it and set it up to play how you like it. One last tip: be careful not to use too much video in your presentation, it can distract your audience and make your presentation look a bit chaotic. Video is a powerful tool, but use it wisely.
